Wildfire risk at its highest level in much of the Netherlands

Share

A high risk of wildfires applies to large parts of the Netherlands, according to a map from the fire department. On Wednesday morning, Phase 2, the highest alert level, was in effect in 17 of the 25 safety regions.

The wildfire risk is not elevated in the northeast of the Netherlands, North Brabant, and parts of South Holland. These areas remain under Phase 1.

The risk of wildfires increases after extended dry conditions. Under Phase 2, landowners, nature managers, and emergency services remain especially vigilant. Some activities in natural areas, such as barbecuing, may be restricted. In Phase 1, authorities remain alert and prepared for potential fires but do not take any additional measures.

Until Tuesday morning, Phase 1 applied nationwide. The risk level was then raised in several regions later that day. In response, the Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday that it would temporarily suspend exercises involving explosives, open flames, and pyrotechnics in nature reserves.
