ZEVENAAR (ANP) – A group of approximately 25 climate activists from Extinction Rebellion blocked the A12 motorway near Zevenaar on Saturday, an ANP reporter observed. The A12 is closed in the direction of the German border, the ANWB also reports. Traffic has come to a standstill.
Police managed to keep several dozen demonstrators off the motorway shortly before 12:00 PM, but a short while later, multiple groups succeeded in getting onto the road. Demonstrators attempting to break through police blockades at the on-ramps were stopped. Police officers are equipped with gear including batons.
The demonstrators are carrying a banner reading “Stop the fossil fuel industry,” the reporter noted.
A large number of police vehicles and police dogs are on the scene. German police are also present, and riot police are arriving. Traffic is being diverted off the motorway via the Zevenaar exit.
