Police made a series of arrests and issued multiple area bans during the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in Zandvoort, according to the town’s mayor. Authorities also referred about fifteen young people to the Bureau Halt youth criminal justice program following alcohol-related incidents.
On Friday, officers arrested three people for public disorder offences, including public drunkenness, and handed out eight 72-hour area bans. Police barred one person from the site for possessing a fake access card.
On Saturday, police made three further arrests for breaching existing area bans, with some individuals attempting to scale perimeter fences. Police also detained five people for general disruption and one for assault. On Sunday, police made three more arrests and imposed three additional area bans.
Mayor David Moolenburgh compared the scale of the incidents to a busy weekend of nightlife in a major city. He noted that the numbers are relatively low given that 105,000 visitors attended the circuit daily, alongside thousands more watching screens in the village. He added that the misbehaviour typically stemmed from people drinking too much.
Under standard procedures, police can issue a 48-hour area ban without mayoral intervention. For the Grand Prix weekend, authorities extended this limit to 72 hours to keep troublemakers away for the entire event.
Mayor Moolenburgh expressed concern over youth drinking habits after about fifteen young people were referred to Bureau Halt over the weekend. He noted that the presence of the organisation highlighted a worrying social trend regarding heavy alcohol consumption among teenagers.
