Budget cuts remain on the books

During the Budget Day debates, Prime Minister Rob Jetten defended the cabinet’s social security reforms. He emphasized that cutting benefits is not the goal. Instead, the focus is rebuilding the system to support citizens better.

However, Jetten refused demands from opposition parties and trade unions to scrap the cuts before talks begin. This decision now threatens progress on a broader social agreement.

PRO leader Jesse Klaver warned that his party will not back down. Calling the current plan “impassable”, he urged Jetten to offer unions a clean slate. Jetten held his ground, arguing that potential savings will be evaluated during implementation.

ChristenUnie leader Mirjam Bikker cautioned against this strategy. She pointed to past youth care reforms, where tying policy changes to forced budget cuts failed to deliver better services or real savings.
