Dry weather is set to return across the Netherlands following a recent period of rain, weather service Weeronline reports. Rain will largely cease from Thursday as sunny spells increase, causing the national rainfall deficit, a key measure of drought, to rise once again, particularly in southern regions.
Despite recent rain showers, the national rainfall deficit stands at 250 millimetres. According to Weeronline, a typical late-September deficit is around 94 millimetres. Regional variations remain significant: while northeastern areas face a deficit of 120 to 200 millimetres, the southern provinces of Zeeland, Limburg and North Brabant record deficits exceeding 300 millimetres.
Persistent dry conditions also continue to affect river levels. At Lobith, the Rhine’s discharge has fallen to 645 cubic metres per second, compared to normal levels of 1,500 to 1,600 cubic metres per second. Water flow is projected to drop further to 590 cubic metres per second in the near future, leading to lower river levels overall.
