The government will delay decisions regarding potential new climate measures until next spring. Minister of Agriculture Jaimi van Essen wrote in a letter to the House of Representatives that the cabinet will then provide more clarity on the extent to which additional policy is needed to meet climate goals through 2040.
On Monday, the PBL Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) reported that significant action is still needed to achieve the government’s target of a 90 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The agency highlighted a substantial gap between current policy and national ambitions.
Van Essen noted that the European Commission plans to release proposals for post-2030 European climate strategies in the autumn, and the cabinet aims to align its policies with these developments as closely as possible.
Earlier on Monday, Minister for Climate Stientje van Veldhoven stated that the cabinet continues to evaluate new steps in climate policy. She noted that upcoming discussions among cabinet members will explore which measures could still prove effective before 2030, though she did not specify what measures were under consideration.
