The Islamic Education Foundation must immediately improve the Cornelius Haga Lyceum in Amsterdam, following an order from Judith Tielen, the State Secretary for Secondary Education. Tielen issued a formal instruction to the school board after the Education Inspectorate found inadequate teaching quality and mismanagement by school management.
Following the publication of the inspectorate report, Tielen indicated that a formal instruction was being considered. This measure represents the strongest legal step the minister can take to stop mismanagement.
“It is unacceptable that these pupils receive inadequate education every day,” Tielen said. “School should be a place where you can develop and progress. School boards must ensure this, but this board repeatedly fails to do so. Enough is enough; improvement for these pupils is urgent.”
Under the instruction, the foundation must quickly create a plan to implement financially viable improvements. The board must also add two extra members. Additionally, the Islamic Education Foundation must report its progress to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science every four weeks.
In July, the foundation’s board claimed the inspectorate had ignored several recent improvements, noting that exam results had improved over the past school year. Over the last three school years, 35-37 per cent of pupils in the school’s (mavo) stream passed their exams, compared with the national average of 92 per cent.
