Dutch small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have sent an urgent letter to the Jetten cabinet. They are calling for measures to improve the business climate in the Netherlands.
“SMEs are the biggest engine of the Dutch economy,” wrote Erik Ziengs, chair of business organisation ONL. The organisation, which says it represents tens of thousands of SME entrepreneurs, warned that it is now “code red for entrepreneurs”.
ONL pointed to falling business confidence and rising costs for companies. It said entrepreneurship, investment and employment would face growing pressure unless the cabinet introduced swift and targeted measures.
The organisation also called on the government to stop what it described as the “stacking” of regulations. ONL cited the enforcement of legislation aimed at tackling bogus self-employment, European pay transparency rules and the truck toll as examples.
According to the entrepreneurs, at least two existing rules should be abolished for every new regulation that is introduced.
