Air pollution reduction yields higher health benefits than previously predicted

Share

The reduction of air pollution has significantly larger effects on public health than the RIVM predicted two years ago. Based on its latest measurements, the institute reports that health gains from reducing fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide emissions will be greater than expected by 2030. If the government implements the proposed policies, the country will achieve its target of a 50 per cent health gain compared to 2016 levels.

Schone Lucht Akkoord monitoring

Every two years, the RIVM calculates the health impacts of the Schone Lucht Akkoord. This agreement represents a formal pact between provinces and municipalities to systematically improve air quality across the Netherlands since 2020.

Stricter European standards

In addition to the domestic goals within the Schone Lucht Akkoord, the Netherlands must comply with stricter European air quality standards. However, current policies will not successfully meet these new European requirements in all locations. Consequently, local authorities must implement additional measures around Amsterdam and Schiphol, within the Rijnmond and IJmond regions, and along various motorways.
