Energy companies launch solar alert to reduce grid congestion

Share

Zeeland-based energy company Delta and grid operator Stedin hope to relieve peak-time pressure on the electricity grid by launching a ‘solar alert’ service for customers. The companies announced that the new service will notify participants every Friday about the weekend hours when solar panels will generate the most electricity. This allows customers to focus their power consumption during those specific peak production windows. By running heavy household appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, or electric vehicle chargers during these designated times, households can actively help balance the local network.

The announcement follows two years of trials in the Zeeland province aimed at tackling grid congestion. During the trials, small groups of customers shifted their electricity usage to periods of high solar power generation. These tests successfully demonstrated a significant reduction in the amount of surplus electricity fed back into the grid during sunny intervals, proving that consumer behavior can play a crucial role in grid management.

Direct combat against grid traffic jams

Reducing the volume of solar power returned to the network directly combats what operators call ‘feed-in congestion’. This refers to traffic jams on the electricity grid that occur when thousands of solar systems simultaneously generate massive amounts of power. When generation outpaces local demand, regional substations become overloaded, which can cause solar inverters to automatically shut down to prevent damage. All Delta customers can now sign up for the new alert service.

Grid operators across the Netherlands are increasingly looking toward behavioral solutions as physical infrastructure upgrades face long delays. Laying new cables and building larger substations requires significant time and faces a severe shortage of skilled technicians. Stedin and Delta hope that by incentivising voluntary energy shifts through clear, weekly communication, they can maximize the use of clean energy without waiting years for physical grid expansions.
