Greenhouse gas emissions in the Netherlands increased by 0.8 per cent in 2025 compared to 2024, according to new figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the RIVM/Emission Registration. Environmental organisations say the rise makes the country’s 2030 climate target even harder to achieve.
Marjolein Demmers, director of Natuur & Milieu (Dutch Society for Nature and the Environment), described the numbers as “worrying figures.” She said the data shows “what happens when climate policy is weakened. Emissions are too high and are no longer decreasing.”
Greenpeace Netherlands also criticised the pace of current climate policy, saying it is moving “too slowly.” Climate expert Maarten de Zeeuw added that the war in the Middle East underscores the need for “focusing on clean and affordable, locally sourced energy should have happened much sooner.”
Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie) called the new figures “crystal clear.” The organisation said the CBS data confirms that major polluting companies are failing to reduce their emissions in line with climate targets.
