The Dutch House of Representatives has voiced support for a direct train between Eindhoven and Brussels. A motion by ChristenUnie MP Pieter Grinwis, has gathered enough cross‑party backing to secure a parliamentary majority. Lawmakers also want a second high‑speed service to run hourly between Rotterdam and Brussels.
At present, aside from the Eurostar, two services connect Rotterdam and Brussels: the Eurocity Direct, which starts at Amsterdam Zuid, and the Eurocity, which departs from Rotterdam and makes more frequent stops.
Grinwis told ANP that one train overtakes the other en route. This means there is effectively only one hourly connection to Brussels, excluding the Eurostar. Furthermore, the Eurostar continues into Europe and is generally more expensive.
Grinwis proposes rerouting the Eurocity to Eindhoven from Rotterdam and compensating Rotterdam with a second Eurocity Direct each hour. He argues this arrangement would benefit both cities.
