Prorail warns of growing staff shortages for track maintenance

Share

Major shortages of technical staff for the maintenance and renewal of the railway network are expected in the coming years. This could delay work, increase the risk of malfunctions, and lead to higher costs for emergency repairs, according to rail infrastructure manager ProRail.

Almost half of the industry’s 5,000 certified mechanics are over the age of 50. One in five is expected to retire within five years. At the same time, too few new staff are entering the sector to replace them.

ProRail says these shortages will make train travel less attractive for passengers. Safety risks are expected to rise, and costs will increase as companies rely more often on temporary workers.

Earlier this month, NS chief executive Wouter Koolmees also warned that passengers should expect continued disruptions due to track maintenance in the years ahead. He said the work is necessary to keep the railway network in good condition.
