Vion sells its food service division to the Group of Butchers

Vion Food Group has agreed to sell its Food Service Business to the Group of Butchers. The company says this step completes its reorganisation, which now focuses mainly on activities in the Benelux.

The deal includes Vion Food Service Holding, Salomon Foodworld, and production sites in Großostheim and Holzwickede. In recent years, Vion also sold three German slaughterhouses in Buchloe, Crailsheim, and Waldkraiburg. CEO Tjarda Klimp said, “Our full focus is on Dutch livestock farmers, operations, and supply chains, aimed at serving national, European, and further export markets.”

Vion has reported losses every year since 2021. As a result, the company launched a transformation programme centred on the Benelux about three years ago. It then closed or sold German divisions that continued to underperform.

Vion produces meat, meat products, and plant‑based alternatives. The company’s website states that the food service division has a net turnover of 257 million euros and 621 employees. However, the Leeuwarden site, where plant‑based alternatives are made, does not appear in the acquisition plans.

Group of Butchers brings together several butchers who produce meat products, soups, meals, and salads under private labels for retail and hospitality. The company operates in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany and has about 3,500 employees.
