Fontys and Avans launch master’s degree in data-driven business

Share

Avans University of Applied Sciences and Fontys University of Applied Sciences will launch a new master’s degree in Data Driven Business in September 2026. This professional programme aims to train “analytics translators” to meet the growing demand for data experts in the Brabant region. These professionals are designed to bridge the gap between data, technology, and organisational management.

Regional demand

Regional analysis shows that many organisations struggle to integrate data-driven working methods effectively. The primary obstacles are often culture, decision-making processes, and interdisciplinary cooperation rather than the technology itself. As a result, there is an increasing need for experts who can turn data insights into strategic and social value.

Theo van der Sanden, team leader at the North Brabant Provincial CIO Office, emphasised the programme’s urgency. He noted that the region needs professionals who can apply data responsibly to policy and decision-making while focusing on public value.

The programme addresses a major challenge: connecting different departments within an organisation. Bart Wernaart, a lecturer at Fontys, explained that the language used by technical teams often differs from that of management. He stated that connecting these two worlds is essential for using technology in a way that aligns with an organisation’s values.

The business sector also reports a high demand for these skills. Ad Reijnen, a data and cybersecurity coach for the development agency REWIN, observed that many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) lack staff who can speak the language of both entrepreneurs and data specialists. He believes the new master’s degree will provide professionals with the technical and domain knowledge necessary to guide these businesses.

Programme in Dutch and English streams

The degree is the result of a partnership between Avans and Fontys, combining their expertise and regional networks. The programme consists of 60 credits and will be offered in two languages: Dutch in Breda and English in Eindhoven. This reflects the international nature of the Brainport region. A one-year full-time course will begin in September 2026, followed by a two-year part-time option in 2027.
